Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom of more than 170 islands in the South Pacific, many of them uninhabited and mostly fringed by white beaches and coral reefs, and covered in tropical forests. The main island, Tongatapu, is protected by lagoons and limestone cliffs. The rural capital of Nuku’alofa is located here, along with beach resorts, plantations, and Ha’amonga’ a Maui, a monumental 13th-century coral gateway.
