Kiribati, an island republic in the Central Pacific, includes 33 coral atolls and islands straddling the equator. With lagoons and white-sand beaches, many of its islands are uninhabited, offering a remote location for fishing, diving, and birdwatching. The populous capital, South Tarawa, made up of small islets, preserves remnants of World War II battles that took place on its shores and is known for its folk dances and handicrafts.
